Sustainia Award 2013: The "Dalkia - city of Borås" project selected among the 10 finalists

The heat storage project presented by Dalkia and the city of Borås in Sweden has been selected, as the winner of the "Best energy solution," among the 10 finalists for the Sustainia Award 2013. The list of finalists was announced yesterday in New York on the occasion of the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit.

Presented at the initiative of the Veolia Environnement Sustainable Development Department, the "Dalkia - city of Borås" project is based on an innovation in optimal heating network management. The project was selected yesterday in New York as one of the 10 finalists for the Sustainia Award, which this year attracted over 500 innovative sustainable solutions from close to 70 countries.

Borås, located close to Gothenburg and with a population of 103,000, entered into a program a long time back to eliminate all use of fossil fuels (coal, gas and heating oil). Following the recovery of household waste for energy, the use of wood energy and heat recovery from wastewater, Boras decided to set up a system that would ease peak demand for heat in winter.

The solution is a 37,000 cubic meter tank that, like a massive vacuum flask, enables Dalkia to store the heat produced by the biomass plant during periods of low consumption and use it to cover peak demand. By smoothing peak consumption this way, Dalkia reduces the need to use fossil fuels and in turn the city's carbon footprint.

The system is an excellent example of Dalkia's strategy of developing a "smart heat grid" concept, the aim of which is to optimize energy efficiency for a given area.

The final winners of the Sustainia Award 2013 will be decided by a committee chaired by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former governor of California, and will be announced on November 7 in Copenhagen.
